Kia ora tatou nga uri o Rangitane o Wairau. There has been lots of interest in the new cultural center being built at Grovetown. The building is starting to take shape now, with the proposed opening date of December 1st 2012.

To keep up to date with the progress of the building – Robinsons Construction have created a blog site http://rangitanecc.blogspot.co.nz

Aquaculture Development

The government has introduced The Aquaculture Amendment (3) Bill into Parliament with the aim of opening up new space – primarily for finfish farming. Since 2004 local authorities or “developers” could apply for a plan change to create new aquaculture areas, but 20% of that space would go to local Iwi. Obviously there has been no new space created in that time.

The Te Tau Ihu forum has had a water-space development proposal in Port Gore put forward by Te Atiawa. The forum has also made a formal approach to the Minister of Fisheries to negotiate a regional agreement (Marlborough only) and it is proposed that the “Iwi” space be allocated before the remainder is tendered – once the new legislation is passed.
