Rangitāne o Wairau welcomes Nelson City Council decision on Māori Ward

RANGITĀNE O WAIRAU WELCOMES NELSON CITY COUNCIL DECISION ON MĀORI WARD

Rangitāne o Wairau have today welcomed and commended the unanimous decision of Nelson City Council to establish a Māori ward within the City.

Rangitāne o Wairau General Manager Corey Hebberd says “today’s decision represents a commitment by Council to ensure iwi Māori representation at the Council table on the same terms as other councillors”

“The decision to establish a Māori ward is a start and an advancement on the status quo — and whilst it doesn’t represent true partnership, we are heartened by the move in this direction”

“The addition of a Māori ward will bring more diversity and better outcomes for Māori and indeed, the entire community”
