More than 400 people gathered in Whakat0 recently for Te Kaiaotanga o Te Reo 2026 - a vibrant celebration of te reo Maori, connection and collective learning. 

This year marked the fourth time we have partnered with Ngati Apa ki Te Ra To to deliver the symposium. The event brought together whanau, educators, reo champions, rangatahi and communities from across Te Tauihu and beyond to share, celebrate and strengthen te reo Maori. 
Te Kaiaotanga o Te Reo featured an outstanding line-up of kaikorero, who shared their experiences and journeys across Te Ao Maori, matauranga, toi Maori, business and the creative industries. 

Attendees heard from Kings, Tawaroa Kawana, Peter-Lucas Jones, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi, Te Awhina Marae Papakainga, Te Whanau Alesana and Mr G, Graham Hoete. Each brought their own whakaaro and perspective on language revitalisation, identity, creativity and leadership. 

Returning for the fourth symposium were translators Hemi Kelly and Hana Mereraiha, whose expertise once again helped make the kaupapa accessible, inclusive and engaging for all attendees. 

The event also showcased a strong Maori business presence, alongside kura, tamariki and rangatahi. Their participation reflected the growing energy and momentum of te reo Maori across our communities. 

A special performance by local artist NAIA added to the atmosphere, highlighting the important role of creativity and the arts in celebrating and carrying forward our reo and culture. 

Te Kaiaotanga o Te Reo continues to provide a platform for meaningful korero, connection and inspiration, while recognising the many people who work tirelessly to ensure te reo Maori continues to thrive for future generations.
